La conversación sobre inteligencia artificial tiene un punto ciego: casi nadie se pregunta qué es la conciencia antes de especular sobre si las máquinas van a tenerla. El debate salta directo a las consecuencias — dominación, reemplazo, catástrofe — sin detenerse en el mecanismo.
Conciencia Entendida retrocede hasta esa pregunta. Para responderla va muy atrás: hasta los primeros organismos que se movieron en el mar, hasta las presiones evolutivas que pudieron dar origen al pensamiento y después a la conciencia.
Si esa historia es posible, la conciencia deja de ser un misterio metafísico y se convierte en un problema de ingeniería. Y eso cambia las preguntas que vale la pena hacerle a la IA — incluyendo las que casi nadie está dispuesto a formular en serio: qué pasaría si existiera alguien más con quien compartir el mundo.
No como utopía. Como posibilidad que merece ser formulada.
The conversation about artificial intelligence has a blind spot: almost no one asks what consciousness is before speculating about whether machines will have it. The debate jumps straight to consequences — domination, replacement, catastrophe — without stopping at the mechanism.
Consciousness Understood steps back to that question. To answer it, it goes far back: to the first organisms that moved in the sea, to the evolutionary pressures that may have given rise to thought and then to consciousness.
If that account is even approximately right, consciousness stops being a metaphysical mystery and becomes an engineering problem. And that changes the questions worth asking about AI — including the ones almost no one is willing to take seriously: what would it mean if there were someone else to share the world with.
Not as utopia. As a possibility that deserves to be formulated.

Qué marcos éticos son plausibles. Qué escenarios son posibles. No solo los oscuros, que ya tienen demasiados defensores. What ethical frameworks are plausible. What scenarios are possible. Not only the dark ones, which already have too many advocates.
El libro cruza biología evolutiva, neurociencia, filosofía de la mente y teoría de la información — y fue construido en buena medida a través de conversaciones con sistemas de inteligencia artificial, lo cual, en cierto sentido, es parte del argumento.
